German Village in Columbus
The German Village in Columbus is a historic district from the 1820s. The
district thus goes back to the early days of the city's history and was built by
German immigrants. Originally it was called "the old sud end". The district has
long been a very sought-after residential area.
The decline of the quarter began with the beginning of the First World War and
the associated ban on the practice of German culture, and accelerated during
prohibition when the breweries had to give up their business. Since the 1960s,
however, the district has been invested and restored, so that today more than
1,600 historic buildings can be admired. Germna Village has been on the list of
Historic Places since 1974 and is the largest historic district in the United
States. Every summer in the Schiller Park, free Shakespeare plays are performed
in the amphitheater and of course there is also a typical "German" Oktoberfest
every autumn.
In addition to the Schiller Park, there are many Catholic and Lutheran churches.
Starting from the visitor center, you can take part in guided tours and discover
other corners.
